Washington CPA — Renton & Kent

CPA services for Renton and Kent, WA — two different city B&O systems, one CPA who knows both.

Renton and Kent both charge their own city B&O tax, but not the same one — Kent layers on a separate square-footage tax that Renton doesn't have. We're a Washington State Licensed CPA practice serving South King County remotely, starting at $80.

Who it's for

Built for Renton & Kent.

South King County's economy runs on logistics and trades, and we've built this page around that:

  • Warehousing and logistics businesses near the Kent Valley industrial corridor, where Kent's square-footage tax can apply
  • Trades businesses and contractors operating out of Renton or Kent needing entity structure and quarterly-estimate guidance
  • Immigrant-owned small businesses who want a CPA who explains things plainly, in a straightforward first consultation
  • Businesses operating in both Renton and Kent who need someone tracking two different city tax systems, not one

Why remote works here

Why Renton and Kent businesses look for an accountant who tracks both city systems.

Renton and Kent get less specialized CPA attention than Seattle or Bellevue, even though their B&O tax systems are genuinely different from each other and from the rest of the state. We serve both cities the same way we serve every city on this list — remotely, through a secure portal, under the same Washington State Licensed CPA credential — with real attention to which city's rules apply to which part of your business.

No Renton or Kent office to drive to, which suits a client base that's often running a warehouse floor or a job site more than sitting behind a desk. Whether you're looking for an accountant in Renton, an accountant in Kent, or someone who can handle both without mixing up the two systems, that's the specific gap this page is built to close.

The tax landscape

Renton and Kent: two different city B&O systems

Renton charges its own city B&O tax at 0.070% for retailing and 0.121% for other classifications (extracting, manufacturing, wholesaling, printing/publishing, retail services, and service & other). Renton exempts businesses with $500,000 or less in annual citywide gross receipts from owing tax — a threshold the city itself chose to set well above the state's own $20,000/year minimum floor — though a return declaring no tax due is still required below that line.

Kent's system is more layered: a gross receipts B&O tax applies once citywide gross income exceeds $250,000 per year, with rates that vary by classification, plus a separate Square Footage Tax that applies to businesses with a physical location inside city limits above a minimum floor-space threshold — Kent requires whichever of the two calculations produces the greater amount. We were not able to confirm Kent's current specific classification percentages and square-footage dollar rates from a source we're fully confident in during this research, so rather than publish a number that could be stale, we'll say this plainly: confirm your current Kent rate and threshold with the city's Tax Division before assuming last year's figures still apply, especially given a documented 2025 rate change to the Manufacturing classification.

State B&O still applies under both city systems: 0.471% for retailing, 0.484% for wholesaling and manufacturing, and the tiered Service & Other rate effective October 1, 2025 — 1.5% under $1 million, 1.75% up to $5 million, 2.1% above that. If your business operates in both Renton and Kent, you may owe three separate B&O-family filings in a given quarter — state, Renton, and Kent — which is exactly the kind of multi-jurisdiction filing that gets missed without someone tracking all three.

Washington and city tax rates, classifications, and thresholds on this page reflect our research of official Washington Department of Revenue and city finance department sources as of August 2026. Several of these figures changed in 2025 and 2026 legislative and rate-setting cycles and can change again — confirm your exact rate and threshold with the Washington Department of Revenue, the relevant city finance office, or on a consultation before filing. This page is general information, not tax advice, and does not create a client relationship.

Renton & Kent tax questions, answered.

No — they're structured differently. Renton has a single gross receipts tax (0.070% retailing, 0.121% other) with a $500,000 exemption threshold. Kent has a two-part system — gross receipts tax plus a separate Square Footage Tax — and you owe whichever is greater, with its own $250,000 gross-receipts threshold.

It's an alternative tax based on your physical footprint inside Kent city limits, which applies if it produces a larger tax bill than the standard gross receipts calculation. We couldn't confirm Kent's current specific rates from a source we're fully confident in, so we recommend confirming your exact figure with Kent's Tax Division directly, and we're glad to help interpret it once you have it.

Generally yes — most businesses operating in both cities need to track and file for each city separately, on top of the state B&O return. It's one of the more common multi-jurisdiction filings we help sort out.

No — we're remote-first with no physical office in either city or anywhere in Washington. Everything runs through a secure portal and scheduled calls.

Business returns start at $150; entity type and multi-city filings affect the final quote, confirmed on a free consultation.

Both, in practice — we're remote-first rather than based in either city, and we work with clients in Renton, Kent, and businesses that operate in both, which is exactly the multi-jurisdiction situation this page exists for.
